Kinnaur
is a Mystical land in The Western Himalayas.
A magical blend of Hinduism – Buddhism
and shamanism, here Gods and demons are
worshipped with equal faith. The place
and its beautiful inhabitants have special
position in old Hindu and Buddhist texts;
they are regarded as amorous beings. Its
inhabitants are regarded as divine musicians,
it is so said that they taught music to
the Gods, which can be easily felt here
during some ceremonies.
Legend
has it that Kinnaur with all its beauty
and splendor fell from the clouds to take
its place in the Himalayas. It is enclosed
bet Zanskar Range to North and Greater
Himalaya to south.
Kinnar
Kailash (6473 Mts.) or Raldang as called
by native Kinnauri’s is one of the
most picturesque peaks of the great Himalayas
mountain system. A popular local belief
also put it as the refuge-place for souls
of the dead. There are many legends associated
with this mystic mountain.
The
mountain acquires different spectacular
shades of colors at different times of
the day. Kinner Kailash Mountain is regarded
as one of the mythical homes of Lord Shiva
and his consort Parvati.
The
journey around Kinnar Kailash is not just
merely a visual experience but an intensely
spiritual voyage too. The route of Kinnar
Kailash Parikarama runs along the foot
of the mountain. In the olden times the
traditional Kinner Kailash Parikarama
was a long journey on foot, over 200kms.
Now motor roads have cut down the walk
to a five day trek from Thangi in the
Tedong valley over Charang Pass (5266
Mts.) to Chitkul in Baspa valley. During
the Janam Ashtami (Birth day of Lord Krishna)
Festival, which usually falls in the Month
of August there is a traditional festival
when all the pilgrims from adjoining villages
gather at the Village of Charang and embark
on the onward yatra of Kinner.
